Don't you think that describing yourself as a solopreneur is so much better than saying you run a small business from home? I love it!
And while there are similarities with being a entrepreneur, it is actually quite different.

A solopreneur is the person who started the business, runs the business, and takes all responsibility for the business. So in some ways, it's riskier. 

Building A Future

Entrepreneurs often have one goal: to build up their business to the point where it's bought by a bigger organisation, and they make a big profit. Solopreneurs are generally in it for the long haul, and are building themselves a lifestyle/future.

Another major difference is that solopreneurs don't usually have anyone to delegate to. And that can be both a positive and a negative. Yes, it gives you total control, but that can be a lonely place. So how can you become a better solopreneur?

Have A Vision

When we're enthusiastic about a new idea, it's easy to hit the road running, without thinking through the small stuff. Before you do anything, you should create a plan and set out your goals.

Have you researched your service/product? Do you know your target market? Is there enough demand? Do you have the necessary skills and tools? 

If you can, workshop your idea with other, trustworthy business people, and take onboard their feedback, be it good or bad.

Do The Groundwork

Put in place everything you need, be it an office space, equipment, finance, childcare, and so on. The less you have to worry about while you're working, the better.

If you are going to work from home, create a separate, designated space. Clear out unnecessary clutter, set-up a desk area, with shelves and drawers for storage. Make it light and bright, with no distractions. Ensure you have all the outlets and wiring you need for computers, phones, internet, and so on.

Dress The Part

There's a misconception that those who work from home, do so in their PJs! Perhaps some do, but it's not recommended. If you are serious about making your business a success, dress the part. I'm not suggesting you wear a suit every day, but choose 'work clothes', rather than casual.

Not only will you feel the part, you are ready to welcome clients, co-workers, suppliers. And besides, all those great outfits will just end up hanging in the back of the wardrobe otherwise!

Join A Business Group

No man or woman is an island. It takes a certain type of person to work alone, and stay (self) motivated. However much you enjoy it, it is still very worthwhile joining a business network group. The meetings give you a regular outing from the 'office', and are invaluable in forming helpful working relationships.

It's an opportunity to brainstorm ideas, compare experiences, seek guidance and motivation, and generally know that you're not alone.
